Why should you buy our charcoal?
There are many types of charcoal on the market - ranging from truly awful to excellent.
Below is a brief roundup, starting with the truly awful:
These usually comprise of ground up charcoal, any type of filler (in many cases coal dust) and petro chemicals to make it capable of being ignited.
IMPORTED LUMP WOOD CHARCOAL.
This is the sort of stuff you can buy from your local garage or DIY store. Produced in the Far East, it's often made from mangrove trees or other threatened species. The inefficient methods of production results in a product that ranges from raw wood to charcoal with a very low carbon content. It's difficult to light and burns away very quickly.
UK RING KILN PRODUCED CHARCOAL.
All charcoal produced in the UK is made from sustainable timber, either from coppicing or woodland management. Using a kiln requires a large degree of skill and experience. The resulting charcoal is therefore of a variable nature. However even at its worst it is head and shoulders above the previously mentioned products.
UK RETORT PRODUCED CHARCOAL
This is the most up to date method of charcoal production. Because of the design, the retort will consistently produce top grade charcoal with a carbon content as high as 98%. In addition, the retort recirculates the harmful gasses (smoke) and burns them in its firebox thus fuelling the whole process.
Result: best charcoal and less polluting.
THE EXETER CHARCOAL RETORT.
In 2011 we needed a way of producing our own charcoal. We looked at ring kiln and quickly rejected them due to their inefficiency and their unavoidable release of pollutants to the atmosphere.
Having read about retorts, we decided that this was the way forward. Unfortunately no one in the world was making a retort that was portable, of a sensible size and that would give consistent results with minimal training.
Having previously, jointly been in mining engineering and the aerospace industry, we decided to use our knowledge to design and produce our own retort.
This resulted in the Exeter Retort. From it's first burn it exceeded our expectations and has gone on to be manufactured, under licence, world wide.
How to use our charcoal.
Because of its purity, Exeter Charcoal can be lit with paper, cardboard, wood shavings and does not need lighter fuel etc.
It will be ready to use within 10 minutes and will not produce flames or smoke. One lot of charcoal will be usable for in excess of one hour. Should you need longer, more charcoal can be added without stopping cooking.
ONCE YOU HAVE USED EXETER CHARCOAL YOU WILL NEVER WILLINGLY USE ANYTHING ELSE.
